Sashiko Denim

Sashiko, meaning ‘little stabs’ is a traditional Japanese hand technique for repairing items using small running stitches to create embroidered designs. Both fixing and strengthening garments, whilst creating beautiful designs most notably with small crosses.

Organised by Denim Prive an intimate online workshop was hosted by Pey, who helped to demonstrate this skillful craft.

Repair don’t replace.

A slow relaxing morning was spent understanding the technique and its application. From fixing tears, holes, crotch blow-outs and more; the end result gives new life and character to each denim garment.

I loved how each fix can be built upon, continuing to mend and repair throughout the garments life. This creates a beautiful patchwork effect of colour and stitching to give truly unique pieces.

I kept it simple for my first attempt, first sewing on my patch and then adding vertical running stitches followed by horizontal running stitches.

Once I had a better understanding of the technique I went on the hunt for some vintage jeans I could revive, mixing up the different patches and techniques to practice more. Still a work in progress, I’m looking forward to developing these further.
